Does CBD Oil Work for Menstrual Pain? We tried it.

The Case for CBD

In most of the United States CBD (short for cannabidiol), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound found in marijuana, can be purchased and used legally (the laws are murky but it’s basically legal). Unlike using marijuana medicinally which contains the psychoative compound THC, using CBD is known to have many of those beneficial properties without the high and the risk of jail time. Among the many benefits reported from use of CBD include reduction of inflammation and joint pain, overall pain relief, even anxiety relief. CBD is seeing headlines most recently for being approved for treatment of a rare form of epilepsy. Most of the claims about the benefits of CBD are not substantiated (yet) but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a useful product at best and a fairly harmless but expensive one to add to hipster coffees and cocktails at worst.

Obviously we are on track in the US to legalization of marijuana in many more states (hopefully!) but since most of us can only buy and use CBD products is it a better alternative to other pain medications, like Midol, to treat menstrual pain?

CBD Forms

There are lots of ways in ingest your CBD- tinctures, salves, lotions, gel capsules, oil drops, and vaping are just a few. After trying a friend’s CBD vape pen I liked it so much I ordered my own– how millennial of me. I was initially interested in trying out CBD for anxiety to see if that would help my insomnia but I knew that it may be useful for pain relief and headaches as well so I made sure I tried using my pen during these times and noted my pain levels before and after. CBD has some lofty claims from dedicated users- I wanted to see if it was as good as they said!

My Experience with CBD

CBD pen with latte

For my aches and cramps I noticed a definite reduction and even elimination of pain after one use of the CBD vape pen. There was no “high” from use, only noticable pain relief. As an overall wellness side effect CBD does also have a calming and focusing effect but I can’t say I always experience that. My pain during menstruation is often a 0-1 but there are some days where, on my heaviest day, I suffer back aches and cramping that range from a 2-5 on the pain scale. Since my discomfort and pain are minimal compared to what many menstruators experience, especially those with endometriosis, I can only say that the CBD personally helps my pain levels. What it does for those in severe pain is not something I can speak to but I do think it’s worth a shot for pain relief for those even higher on the pain scale.

The Cost of CBD

CBD can be somewhat expensive, especially if you’re using it often. The pen I purchased has 150 doses and runs $45 but the brand, Select CBD, often runs sales so it can be purchased for less. There are other brands and prices will vary, I just loved the discretion/color of the pen Select sells. I will say that even if I were in a state where recreational cannabis were legal I would continue using CBD for pain relief more than reaching for the real thing- it’s been a great addition to my wellness routine. I’m seeing many friends and neighbors who are using it quietly (due to stigma) who swear by it as well. There are many wonderful resources on CBD that you may want to research before trying it yourself including, of all places, Bon Appetit.

  1. CBD is the greatest gift from nature. I don’t want to say too much, but, I could say this: CBD has the healing power to cure any illness. Actually I am 25% away from curing my chronic desease.

  2. Hi so I have endemetriosis, cysts and fibroids. My level of pain the first day of my menstrual cycle is a 9 out of 10 and I am not exaggerating for I have a high pain tolerance. It’s debilitating and I cannot even move let alone walk the entire first day which causes problem for me having two jobs and a full time student schedule. I am sober so cannot use thc products, but need a high quality cbd. Can anyone lead me in the direction of high quality cbd and the form of use that will help the most? Thanks in advance

    1. Hi,
Depending on where you live, and accessibility in your country or import rules, it’s a little hard to give specific advice on where to get. But if you’re in Europe, the Swedish brand “Hemply Balance” (they produce in USA, so perhaps you can get it there too) have very high quality Cbd products and different strengths, and some water soluble products which have a higher bioavailability. I think they ship within Europe, I recommend you to ask their customer service, they are very sweet and answer very quickly. Go for the strongest and water soluble products, to get the most Cbd pr doses. Their best buy/most Cbd for your money, is the «Cbd Plain 20%, 2000mg» . This one is water soluble, in powder, easy to put in your favourite drink, tea, cacao or whatever you prefer 🙂
Also another very affordable, healthy, natural and effective tip that helps me soooo much when I get strong menstrual cramps, is taking a 400mg dose of Magnesium Malate (there are many forms of magnesium, but Malate is considered the healthier, I’m a Nutritionist so I can verify it 😉 ), and lay down a bit to breathe & relax the muscle contractions, while waiting for the magnesium to be absorbed to the blood stream. Also to speed up the absorption, crush the tablets before swallowing with lots of fresh water 🙂 The magnesium malate relaxes the muscle contractions, is more bioavailable, and non laxative like some other types of magnesiums. I’ve been using the brands “Natures Life” (my favourite and most economic), “Source Natruals” and “Shift”. I get them at iHerb, but probably your local health food store also have some 🙂
      Hope these tips helps 🙂
      Best wishes, Astrid 🌸🙏🏼😃

      1. Btw Hemply Balace have no trace of THC, so no worries about legal problems (most countries, but check the rules in your country) or any feelings of “high” 🙂
If you feel you need a stronger dose of Magnesium malate than 400mg, you can increase by 200mg (600mg total), and see how this works for you 🙂

      1. The supreme court in Sweeden just banned Hemply Balance cbd products in sweeden. They argued that it since thc is a illegal substance, even trace of it would make cbd oil a illegal drug.

So when Hemply Balance promote statments as THC-free products and untracable thc, that makes me wonder about the seriousness of this company.

  3. Jo, We have a local company where I live that sells a high quality CBD oil. They’re local farmers. They literally grow it, distill it, and sell it. The company is called Head and Heal from Cortland, New York. Google them. I am a chronic migraine sufferer; I haven’t had a headache since I started using it. The stuff is a godsend.

  4. I had these same issues until I found Hemp Bombs cbd gummies. I get them at my local CBD store. The bottle has 70 gummies for 2000 mg total. I take two (28.5 mg each) and it is the only thing that even touches my pain. It is literally a life saver! I hope this helps!

  5. How to sensibly buy LEGAL CBD oil? Because I got a letter saying customs have confiscated my package two times already and I’m pissed.

  6. CBD is a compound found in marijuana but what your are taking is derived from hemp not MJ. They are different plants but both in the Cannabis family. Your first sentence makes it sound like you are using CBD from Marijuana.

    1. I agree – the statement is misleading. Although you can find trace amounts of CBD in the marijuana plant, it would be silly to harvest from MJ because it’s been selectively bred to have high amounts of THC instead. It is this confusion that has people thinking their CBD gummies are like the “edibles” they’d get in a recreational state like CO. And it’s this type of confusion that has made it so difficult for legal institutions to trust the hemp industry. I hope the author edits for clarity.

We are presently in the process of increasing our online presence and growing our organic traffic and Google rankings. We are doing advertising on CBD and vape mags, CBD Store Directory listings and more. We are also building backlinks on CBD blogs. I wanted to find out how much it would cost to public a couple of blog posts with backlinks on your site putacupinit.com?

As you can appreciate, the CBD market is becoming cut throat and without these CBD backlinks, we will not be able to compete. A website that is on page two is in the Google graveyard where nobody goes 🙂

I look forward to hearing from you. Our objective is to build as many CBD backlinks as possible. If you have any other CBD sites, please let me know.

    Kind regards
